Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

A SECOND SPECIAL ISSUE (SI) ANNOUNCEMENT!

We are thrilled to announce the upcoming Special Issue (SI)—“Full STEAM Ahead! in Deaf Education” which will be published in Education Sciences and feature educational topics within STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics).

The SI will expand upon the 2021 Special Issue “Critical Topics in Mathematics Education: Research to Practice with Deaf and Hard of Hearing Learners” published in the American Annals of the Deaf. In the first SI, Pagliaro and Thom as co-editors along with 11 authors focused on mathematics instruction concepts, pedagogy, and challenges for PK-college. The SI was much-needed, well-received, and the first mathematics education SI in the 175-year history of the journal.

Now two years later, Drs. Pagliaro and Thom are keen to collaborate with Dr. Chris Kurz of RIT and co-edit a second SI. This SI in Education Sciences will present new research, scholarship, and pedagogy that promotes and informs STEAM learning within deaf and general education.

The STEAM SI will feature a range of topics that showcase STEAM as an integrated whole as well as the important roles that science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics can play in promoting education for learners.

Deaf perspectives as well as untapped opportunities for D/deaf and hard of hearing learners to excel within the STEAM areas will be emphasized. We welcome diverse contributing authors, especially DHH and BIPOC scholars, both established and emerging, from around the world, generating international authorship of and readership for researchers, educators, postsecondary students, classroom teachers, and the public. Articles will offer current and comprehensive reviews of the literature relevant to one or more of these areas of study. Critical perspectives from deaf education and STEAM education will be emphasized as they relate to the following: educational philosophies and theories; curriculum studies; learning and teaching; pedagogies; teacher education; as well as testing and evaluation. As such, authors will establish relevant connections across fields and areas; identify gaps in understanding of how DHH students learn STEAM-related skills and knowledge; generate topics for future research and/or practice; and present conceptual and/or empirical evidence to explicate key implications and considerations for teachers, educators, and researchers.

We encourage you to submit your extended abstract (see also below) and welcome any questions you might have.

Extended Abstract Submission Information

We invite interested authors to submit a one-page extended abstract (maximum 500 words, single-spaced). The contents should:

  • reflect robust perspectives and understandings concerning the proposed topic;
  • highlight the centrality of critical perspectives as they relate to deaf education within STEAM education;
  • be supported by evidence, including but not limited to, theoretical and empirical data, previous studies/literature, and appropriate study design.

The editorial panel (co-editors) for this forthcoming Special Issue (SI) will review the one-page abstract submissions and extend invitations to a select group for complete draft manuscripts. In addition to a high quality of content, invitations will aim to ensure diversity in contributions across authors, geographic locations, STEAM content, methodologies, as well as learning levels and contexts.

Upon submission, complete draft manuscripts will go through both internal (by co-editors) and blind external reviews. Decisions on acceptances, revisions, and rejections will be made on the basis of those reviews.

In order to ensure a timely publication, a strict timeline (see below) will be followed.
